My wedding was the third of the year of the weddings on June 13th at "half past two". Enjoy a few photos by the incredibly talented Melanie Mansfield

And here are 2 taken by friends:

And then the best one of the day, me & my knee brace :)

year of the weddings numero dos

After Rebecca's wedding, one of my best friends, Dana, was married next on May 16th. Dana was also married at a local church and her reception was in the back yard of a beautiful farm house under a huge white tent. Dana had a huge wedding party (9) and the events leading up to the wedding were AMAZING. Dana had great showers (and lots of them) and by the far the best bachelorette party I have ever attended (thanks to Urs & Ang).
I blogged about how close her wedding brought my friends & I here. Dana's reception was also full of dancing and SWEATING. One little girl even opted to keep throwing her dress over her head while she danced, it was magical.

Fashionable Friday... a few days late

I had this scheduled to post Friday but for some reason it didn't.
I have been trying to drink more water, so I've started using the big water machine at work, but now I need a nice thermal mug to keep it cold while I force myself to drink it.
Currently I've been using a Royal Caribbean mug I bought just so I could get free soft drink refills on the cruise I took two years ago. But of course I want a new one.

I really want a Lilly one in the precious pink & green gator print and it's only $14.

But...I found one I liked even better over at 2 Preppy Girls I like that I could monogram it and I LOVE the purple & yellow fleur de lis pattern.

I also like this Jonathan Adler mug in the pink, orange & yellow print, that's also around $14 at Preppy Princess
.
Decisions, decisions.

04/09 - 04/10 Year of the Weddings #1

From April 09 to April 10 I had seven weddings to attend, four of which I was in and four of which I was rocking a knee brace.
I'm going to spend a few blogs to tell you about our adventures during the weddings of last/this year.

First came my cousin Rebecca, who was married April 25th. Her wedding was at a local church in the evening and her reception was a giant shin-dig with an open bar at the country club. There was a lot of dancing (they had both a DJ and a band) and happy times which was great considering the next week was filled with sad moments when Mema Kay passed away. I will always remember Rebecca's wedding as the beginning of the season and a day of sunshine before a storm.

Rebecca is just about 5 feet tall, but she stood out above everyone on her wedding day. Her big smile and bright blue eyes made her such a beautiful bride and the way her husband smiled at her made her seem twelve times as gorgeous as she already is. I got to see a lot of the Harrell side of the family I rarely get to see on Becca's big day and I saw my cousin Myrna dance in a way I've never seen someone over the age of 50 dance before.

black thumb

Gardening has never been my forte.
I love flowers and I love to design landscaping, but when I put a plant in the ground, pot, basket or anything, it dies. As if my hands are coated with plant killer.
Josh and I planted an expensive peony bush when we moved in, it never grew.
Papa gave me a geranium that he has kept alive for a few years without doing anything but leaving it out in the sun and letting the rain water it, it died the second day it was at my house.
So, I retired my black thumb and have Josh handle all the planting, and low and behold it worked.
Josh planted this pink hydrangea that his parents gave me when Mema Kay died and it is actually blooming! In my yard!

This is another hydrangea from Mema Kay's funeral that someone gave to my parents. It isn't quite as tall as my pink one, but the blooms are plentiful.

I like to think that maybe Mema is helping the flowers grow a little, and that their growth has nothing to do with Josh just being a better gardener than I am :)

Wordless Wednesday: our little Sookie is growing up..

Sookie.
June 2009:

June 2010
laying on the same couch (and taken with my phone instead of camera)

She is a beast. She weighed around 25 lbs. when we brought her home from Josh's Uncle Mark's, currently she tips the scale around 105 lbs.
This would be fine if she realized she is indeed a small bear, instead she is confused and believes she is a lapdog. She hops into our laps, steps on our feet and sleeps on us like she is a small princess.
Like this:

Bless her.

yes, I'm aware of how much this makes me a dork

I really, really want to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando.
I've been stalking the Universal website all morning taking the "flying tour" of the theme park and viewing the different galleries.
I am not ashamed to say I have read every single book and watched all the movies. J.K. Rowling is an incredible writer and has such an imagination to invent all new creatures, talents and mixing Latin and other languages to make up spells and what-nots. It's hard enough to write a story and make others see what you mean with actual circumstances and situations based on real life, so I can't imagine how much creativity it took to develop the H.P. stories, I am truly in awe of her skills.
This theme park has so many things to offer.
You can visit Hogwarts, which looks so much like the movie version and how the book describes it, it's unreal.

Hogwarts

You can also visit Hogsmeade, the village from the novels, and shops from the books like Dervish & Banges & Olivanders. There's even a souvenir shop named "Filch's Emporium of Confiscated Goods".

Dervish & Bange's

Hogsmeade also has a restaurant like the book called Three Broomsticks

Three Broomsticks

The park offers several rides like Flight of the Hippogriff, Harry Potter & the Forbidden Journey and the Dragon Challenge.

Flight of the Hippogriff

Whenever I visited Disney as a child, we always avoided Universal because of my irrational fear of sharks and all the Jaws posters that were everywhere, but despite my fear, I think I may have to take a trip down to Orlando and hang with my pal Harry :)

Big Mark day

I am a daddy's girl.

photos by Melanie Mansfield at Portraiture by Melanie

My daddy, affectionately called Big Mark is one of my best friends.
He is stern, serious and always has on his "i'm a P.A." hat, but he has his funny moments and we share a love for sushi, Sci-Fi movies and being stubborn.
My family's biggest problems is always trying to find a suitable gift for Big Mark on father's day.
What do you buy a man who has been such a positive role model in so many ways?
Big Mark sold his sleep study company, Remlabs, to go back to school and get his B.S. THEN go back to med school, all while he worked 7PM to 7AM 3 nights a week at the hospital as a respiratory therapist.
He would sleep for a while in the mornings before waking up, studying then heading to class.
Despite his grogginess and sometimes crankiness, Big Mark still made sure he was at Webbs Chapel Baptist Church every Wednesday night and Sunday.
I couldn't have asked for a better man to set an example of how a real, Christian man should lead his life. He did everything he could for Dee and I and despite how much I hated him sometimes when I was a teenager for making me be home by 11 or not letting me go on trips I shouldn't have been on anyway, he is now my best friend.
Back to the present dilemma.
He has every Blu-Ray and DVD known to man and already has several gadgets, so this past Sunday we gave him a Power Mat.

This thing is so cool, you just lay your BlackBerry, iPod, Navigation system, and etc. on top of the mat and charge them without worrying about tangled cords.
Big Mark was pleased, and when Big Mark is happy, we all are :)

National Wear Your Lilly Day

Today is the first ever National Wear Your Lilly Day.
And I can't even participate :(
Sadly, none of my dresses are quite office appropriate, so I will probably be rocking my favorite Lilly around the house tonight while I cook supper instead.

I die for Frye

I need these Frye "Dorado" boots.

I also need them to not cost $498.
I spent allll last fall looking for flat, tall, not slouchy, Cognac color riding boots, but I never found any within my budget that looked okay on my giant 9.5 size foot. They either turn up at the end like elf shoes or slouch around my ankles or are too narrow for my calves.
Maybe the boot fairy will bring some for my birthday?

anniversary dinner at Aqua Star

While Josh and I were happy to enjoy a week in HHI with my whole family, we wanted to get away Friday night to celebrate our 1 year anniversary (a little early since our actual anniv. was Sunday), so we drove the 45 minutes to Savannah, GA and ate at the Aqua Star.
I chose the restaurant after polling friends and researching lots of places in GA online. Some suggested the Ole Pink House, others said Elizabeth on 37th, but those just weren't what I was looking for. I wanted somewhere quiet, boutique-ish and with a great view of downtown Savannah without being over-the-top expensive.
Aqua Star fit everything I wanted.
The restaurant was located on the 2nd floor of the Westin Resort in DT Savannah on the waterfront. It was quiet, unique, had great service and was voted "Best View in Savannah" so it certainly fit the bill.

We started with the Firecracker Calamari then moved on to a cup of SheCrab Soup (which was marvelous and had just the right amount of sherry) and then on to our main courses.
Josh had the Lobster Tail and Filet.

I of course had to try a little of his and was surprised at how great the lobster was. It was cooked tempura style, so it reminded me a lot of my favorite sushi (Shrimp Tempura).

I had the crab cakes with sweet potato chips.

I should probably mention that I am slightly allergic to crab. But I adore it, so I usually just take a Benadryl and enjoy all of that I want.
After dinner, we had planned to walk around in downtown Savannah and spend some time in the area.... but it was around 98 degrees and I was already feeling the sleepy effects of the Benadryl, so after paying our slightly expensive check (I reminded Josh that it was a very special meal so price didn't matter, but that didn't keep him from pulling a face at the 3-digit total) we headed back to HHI.
It's a good thing we went back because apparently Benadryl doesn't work as well when I eat sheCRAB soup AND CRAB cakes... I got incredibly sick. (Happy Anniversary to me).
Here's a few photos from our dinner (forgive their quality, I left my camera at the cottage so the BlackBerry was all I had):

The front of the Westin

The view from our window seat table

A giant boat came through the harbor as we were eating, look how large it is compared to the building at its bow

I thought a really cool feature in the Aqua Star was the fans. They are all connected by belts which keep them running.

I highly recommend the Aqua Star!

new look

So how do we feel about the new look of the blog? Let me know!

crazy lady

let me start this by saying that I don't think there is anything wrong with exercising on the beach... however this is not a smart thing to do on a very crowded beach, in 102 degree weather wearing all black
Which brings me to this lady:

Note the shirtless man giving her weird looks, he wasn't the only one.
The lady jumped, did free weights, lunges, and ONE-ARMED PUSH-UPS on the wide beach of Hilton Head, SC all morning long.
She wore that all black outfit, the hat, and white gloves the entire time. Even her 6 children were dressed that way.
Big Mark was worried he was going to have to run to her aid any moment since obviously she wanted to have a heat stroke.

under construction.

excuse the mess as I try to re-decorate my blog. I am hating my background, layout and just about everything about it as of late (except the post themselves). So, bare with me as I attempt to style it to actually reflect.. me!

i'm back!

I'm back, after a wonderful vacation in Hilton Head, SC.
Will post photos, tidbits and other wonderful-ness from our week of relaxation including a story about a crazy lady in all black working out with free weights on a crowded beach and our wonderful anniversary meal in Savannah.
Have a great week!

Fashionable Friday: Packing for Hilton Head

I am a list maker.
And when it comes to packing, I usually have a list of outfits and things needed to be packed at least a week before the actual trip.
However, packing for Hilton Head usually requires several lists as well as a Tylenol and or two.
The problem with packing for a beach trip is that you need at least three outfits for each day.

1) An outfit for the beach (i.e. bathing suit, cover-up, beach bag & Rainbows)
Favorite bathing suit brand: Lilly Pulitzer for its bright colors and great fits

2) Outfit to be lazy in after the shower but before you get ready to go to dinner/out
Favorite brand for bum clothes: Soffe shorts if you grew up in N.C. I'm sure you have spent your share of days in these shorts with the waistband rolled down :) they are best accompanied by a soft cotton t-shirt (preferably in E.C.U. colors)

3) Outfit to wear to dinner/out, which varies by establishment. The main thing is to always have a sweater/shrug of some kind to wear over an outfit because restaurants at the beach are notoriously freezing.

Favorite brand/outfit for fairly casual outing: Joe's jeans, Jack Rogers sandals & plain tank top with a great necklace (I like to tear apart necklaces from different places taking charms from one and adding it to a different chain and what not)

Favorite brand/outfit for semi-dressy outing: J. Crew dress and Moon & Lola earrings with JRs of course

This year I have to have a step above the semi-formal because Josh and I are going down to Savannah for our anniversary dinner on Friday night (going to the AquaStar, will tell you all about it when we return). So I am wearing my all time favorite brand for anything Lilly Pulitzer . In fact, I'm wearing the long Lilly dress I wore on our honeymoon, with my green & white JRs and my Mema Kay's pearl earrings. (forgive the grainy photo, I took it with my whole cell phone)

#3 is what gets me.
I pack a variety of outfits because I like to have choices once I get to the beach house AND I never know what the weather is going to do.
I narrowed my "going out" ensembles to just 8 (we are there 6 nights so this is quite the accomplishment).

I won't be blogging while I'm in Hilton Head, so I'll write again June 14th :) have a fabulous weekend!

Wordless Wednesday - Hilton Head in 3 days

A week of laying out, reading, bike riding, counting how many Ohio license plates we see and down time with BigMark, theWendy, Mema Dean, Dee, JohnJohn & Joshua. So excited, it's my favorite place and it's been way too long.

Here a few pictures from our past trips, the first is when some baby raccoons got trapped in the dumpster by the pool
they were just floating around the slush on one bag
mama, me, & dee
still silly
